GET A WARRANTY: If you buy a car that's only a few years old, the manufacturer's warranty might still be valid. GET IT CERTIFIED: Some dealers sell "certified preowned" vehicles, which means the auto underwent rigorous testing before it was sold. It's a little extra insurance that you won't drive away in a lemon.

GET IT FINANCED: A few dealers are offering "Buy Here, Pay Here" financing. Essentially, they finance your vehicle and every week or so, you have to drop off or mail a payment to them. These types of deals require little or no credit check, so they're available to almost anyone. However, you'll be paying a significant amount of interest--more so than if you had gone with traditional financing. It's always best to try and get an auto loan through a bank or other lender if possible.

GET A MECHANIC TO CHECK IT: Whether you're buying from an independent seller or a used car dealer, request that a mechanic of your choosing check out the vehicle before you buy it. This type of objective opinion--though you'll have to pay for it--can help ensure that the car you buy is in top running condition.
